Sunovia to do lights for Texas town

Sunovia Energy Technologies, Inc., a Sarasota-based renewable energy and energy conservation company, has been awarded an LED lighting contract by the city of Fairview, Texas. The contract calls for Sunovia to provide its energy-efficient EvoLucia LED lighting for a major thoroughfare in Fairview, Sunovia CEO Carl Smith said. That contract is worth about $500,000, Smith said, but could lead to a much-larger job installing the lights throughout Fairview.

Carl Smith and Craig Hall moved to Florida from North Carolina with the intent of becoming lifelong venture capitalists.

The childhood friends formed a company called Research Capital, but in 2003, a business plan that would change their lives forever landed on their desks. It was a proposal for a company that hoped to create a solar-powered, cell phone battery charger. Smith and Hall hired engineers, intellectual property attorneys and other experts to study the technology but, as it turned out, they didn’t fund the venture because the technology wouldn’t be universally compatible for all cell phones.
